2006 was an unprecedented year of expansion for the dojo. We had a large influx of new students, both kids and adults, who had heard of the West Island Karate's reputation for excellence in teaching Kyokushin Karate. Welcome to all of you. Osu!
This year our Christmas party took place at the Kirkland Arena where our annual tournament is also held. A potluck supper, holiday music, tournament videos of our students and a slideshow of the Beach Training were enjoyed by all. Happy holidays and a healthy and prosperous New Year to everyone!
During the recent black belt grading held at West Island Karate, Shihan Roman surprised Sensei John as well as Sensei Ron by testing and promoting both to yondan (4th dan). Congratulations to both! Way to go Sensei...we're proud of you. Osu!
Many of our students were recently graded and promoted. As always, the testing was rigorous and challenging, but our students came through with flying colours. Well done and congratulations to all. Osu!
West Island Karate participated in the first beach training at Old Orchard Beach in Maine. The training was cold and wet, but very fun...exactly what Sensei had in mind. Sosai would have been proud. Osu!
The 2006 edition of our annual tournament, the Matsushima Challenge, was once again a resounding success! Kids from all over Canada came to Montreal to display their Kyokushin karate skills and compete in a friendly atmosphere of spirited competition. As always, the technique, determination and mutual respect displayed by all the competitors set a new standard of excellence at this event. Special thanks to Kancho Matsushima, his wife Mikiko-san and Shihan Roman for once again honouring us with their attendance at our tournament. Congratulations to all the competitors! You are all winners! Osu!
West Island Karate once again participated in the World Kanreikai Karate Tournament held annually at John Abbott College in Ste. Anne de Bellevue. We brought quite possibly the largest team we've ever assembled for this particular tournament. As usual, our students displayed tremendous skill and spirit and were very successful. Thank you to Sensei Denis Cordeiro for hosting an excellent tournament. Special thanks to Sensei John and Sempai Patsy for the extra time they spent preparing our kids for the competition. Osu!
