  • Gradings will begin Saturday, June 3rd.  Click here to view the schedule.  Please note your starting time based on your CURRENT belt level.

PLEASE ARRIVE AT LEAST 30 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR STARTING TIME to register for the grading and pay the grading fee.  There is a grading fee of $50 for ALL levels (including for a new bar) which must be paid at the grading BEFORE it commences.  The grading fee will be reimbursed if your child does not pass.  PLEASE RESPECT YOUR STARTING TIME.  It will be a very busy day so we cannot accommodate late arrivals.

Please note that not everyone will be graded, but you should still be prepared and attend the grading to support your fellow students regardless (one day it will be your turn and you will need their support).  Passing the grading is also NOT a given.  Regular attendance for the minimum required period and maximum effort during each class are only the MINIMUM requirements.  Sensei John considers many other factors.  He alone understands each student's abilities and is therefore the only person qualified to determine whether a student is prepared for the next level in their training.  Advancing a student before he/she is fully ready can be very detrimental to their development (and their safety).  Sensei's decision will be FINAL and we ask that you please RESPECT and TRUST his judgement in this regard.  We remind you that asking whether you will be graded or disputing the outcome of a grading is EXTREMELY poor etiquette and will not be tolerated.  Please remember that Kyokushin Karate training is a slow steady process...it is NOT a race!  Good luck to all the candidates.  Osu!

  • On Saturdays, please bring running shoes (plus a hat and sunscreen if desired) from now on.  We will be training outdoors during the summer whenever weather permits.

  • Fighter's Training on Fridays from 6:00 to 7:00 pm (open to all orange belts and higher / 6-12 years old / $10).

  • "Ladies Only" class every Friday from 7:30 to 8:30 pm with Sempai Kimm at Karaté de L'Île.  The class is open to *ALL* women (both dojo members and non-members) who are 18 and over.  This is NOT a fighting class.  No karate experience is required.  The focus will be on endurance and strength training exclusively.  Full karate uniforms are not necessary.  Dojo members should wear their dogi pants and a t-shirt.  Non-members can wear any comfortable pants/shorts and a t-shirt.  The class will cost $7 for dojo members and $10 for non-members (please pay Sempai Kimm upon arrival).  All proceeds will be used to help fund Sempai Kimm's travels to international tournaments.  So everyone (friends, family members, moms, wives, sisters, etc) is welcome and invited to participate.  It will honestly be a great vibe!

Welcome to
WEST ISLAND KARATE ® / KARATÉ DE L'ÎLE

West Island Karate ® and Karaté de L'Île are martial arts schools located in Beaconsfield and Île-Perrot, respectively, on the west island of Montreal, Quebec, Canada (also serving Pincourt, Kirkland, Pierrefonds, Pointe-Claire and Dollard-des-Ormeaux).  The dojo (school) was founded by Sensei John Kalaidopoulos (4th Dan) in 1997.  West Island Karate / Karaté de L'Île hosts the West Island Karate Championships, our annual tournament for juniors and adults which is one of the premier events of its kind in Canada.  We teach Kyokushin Karate the traditional way in a friendly, family-oriented environment with an emphasis on technique, physical fitness, and the building of the mind and spirit.  While always having fun and being challenged, our students learn much more than a respected martial art and self-defense.  They also learn invaluable lessons which can be applied to every aspect of their lives, now and in the future.  This is the Kyokushin way.

The West Island Karate / Karaté de L'Île website serves several purposes:

  1. To convey what West Island Karate and Karaté de L'Île are all about and to show that we are not just any typical karate dojo...our spirit, knowledge and sense of community set us apart.

  2. To act as a bulletin board for our students and their families by announcing news and upcoming events

Please note that you can go directly to "News and Events" at any time by clicking on the  Karaté de L'Île / West Island Karate patch at the bottom of every page of our site.

  3. To help students (and the public in general) learn more about Kyokushin karate by supplementing their knowledge of techniques, terminology, etiquette and Kyokushin philosophy.

We appreciate any comments or suggestions you may have to help us improve our site, so please feel free to drop us a line.  Thank you for your time and we hope you enjoy your visit.  Osu!
