  • Click here to download the November dojo newsletter from Shihan John with important news on upcoming events.

  • Junior grading for those who are currently white, orange or orange/blue bar on Saturday, Nov. 18th, 9 to 11 am.  You must register and pay the $50 grading fee between 8:15 and 8:50 am at the dojo on the morning of the grading (the grading fee will be reimbursed if your child does not pass).  PLEASE RESPECT THE STARTING TIME.  It will be a very busy day so we cannot accomodate late arrivals...sorry.  Parking will be limited, but please do NOT park at Centre Dentaire Sichet or at the depanneur.  Instead, park on 5th or 6th Avenue, or just down the street at the Hôtel de Ville.

Please note that not everyone will be graded, but you should still be prepared and attend the grading to support your fellow students.  Passing the grading is also NOT a given.  Regular attendance and maximum effort during every class are *MINIMUM* requirements.  Shihan John considers many other factors.  He understands each student's abilities and is therefore the ONLY person qualified to determine whether a student is prepared for the next level in their training.  Advancing a student before he/she is fully ready can be very detrimental to their development (and their safety).  Shihan's decision will be FINAL and we ask that you please RESPECT and TRUST his judgement in this regard.  We remind you that asking to be graded or disputing the outcome of a grading is EXTREMELY poor etiquette and will not be tolerated.  Please remember that Kyokushin Karate training is a slow steady process...it is NOT a race!  Good luck to all the candidates.  Osu!

  • Inter-dojo training with the team from Dojo Tansei on Saturday, Nov. 18th, from 12:30 to 4:00 pm, followed by pizza.  Cost $15.  You must register with Shihan John ASAP to reserve your spot.

  • Membership renewals are due Monday, Nov. 20th, for the next 12 weeks.  Note that we now accept E-Transfers in addition to cash and cheques.

  • Junior grading for those who are currently blue to brown belt on Saturday, Nov. 25th, 9 to 11 am.

  • Please do not park across at the Centre Dentaire Sichet or at any spots at the strip mall next to the depanneur or Kumon.  We have been advised that they will no longer tolerate our students using their empty spots.  Please use the dojo parking lot or 5th and 6th Avenue.  Thank you.

  • West Island Karate / Karaté de L'Île is very proud to announce that Sensei John has earned his Godan.  He participated in last week's yudansha shinsa (black belt grading) which followed the 6th World Karate Championship in Weight Categories in Astana, Kazakhstan.  The grading took place at Burabay Lake in Kazakhstan and was overseen by Kancho Kenji Midori and several other high level Shihans of WKO Shinkyokushinkai.  In typically humble fashion, Sensei John wanted to keep it a secret until he had first shared the news with his students (whom he considers his extended family) at the dojo.  This has been a very long time coming (he earned his Yondan in December of 2006...10 and a half years ago).  He has been training now for over 28 years, running his own dojo and teaching for the past 20 of those years.  As a Yondan, Sensei John made some personal sacrifices by becoming an independent dojo for five years before joining the WKO two years ago.  By becoming an independent dojo, he sacrificed his ability to be promoted in order to be able to freely train with others, regardless of organization, so that he could improve his own karate and pass on that newly garnered knowledge and experience to his students.  Sensei John has always put his students first so that he could help them achieve their goals.  So all of us at West Island Karate / Karaté de L'Île are beyond thrilled to see Sensei do something for himself and finally achieve one of his own personal goals.  The entire dojo is very happy and extremely proud of him for reaching this milestone.  Omedetou gozaimashita (congratulations) Shihan John (wow...that's going to take some getting used to for those of us who have been calling him Sensei for the past 10 to 20 years :-)).  OSU Shihan!  Click here to see all of the photos from the grading (photos by WKO Shinkyokushinkai).

  • Congratulations to Sempai Kimm, Sempai Benoit and Sempai Yannick for some great fights at the 6th World Karate Championship in Weight Categories in Astana, Kazakhstan.  You faced some very challenging competitors (Sempai Kimm's opponent in the first round went on to win the women's light-heavyweight division) and you should be very proud of your performances and the hard work you put in to compete at the world level.  Omedetou gozaimashita Sempais.  We're all very proud of you!  Osu!

Welcome to
WEST ISLAND KARATE ® / KARATÉ DE L'ÎLE

West Island Karate ® and Karaté de L'Île are martial arts schools located in Beaconsfield and Île-Perrot, respectively, on the west island of Montreal, Quebec, Canada (also serving Pincourt, Kirkland, Pierrefonds, Pointe-Claire and Dollard-des-Ormeaux).  The dojo (school) was founded by Shihan John Kalaidopoulos (5th Dan) in 1997.  West Island Karate / Karaté de L'Île hosts the West Island Karate Championships, our annual tournament for juniors and adults which is one of the premier events of its kind in Canada.  We teach Kyokushin Karate the traditional way in a friendly, family-oriented environment with an emphasis on technique, physical fitness, and the building of the mind and spirit.  While always having fun and being challenged, our students learn much more than a respected martial art and self-defense.  They also learn invaluable lessons which can be applied to every aspect of their lives, now and in the future.  This is the Kyokushin way.

The West Island Karate / Karaté de L'Île website serves several purposes:

  1. To convey what West Island Karate and Karaté de L'Île are all about and to show that we are not just any typical karate dojo...our spirit, knowledge and sense of community set us apart.

  2. To act as a bulletin board for our students and their families by announcing news and upcoming events

Please note that you can go directly to "News and Events" at any time by clicking on the  Karaté de L'Île / West Island Karate patch at the bottom of every page of our site.

  3. To help students (and the public in general) learn more about Kyokushin karate by supplementing their knowledge of techniques, terminology, etiquette and Kyokushin philosophy.

We appreciate any comments or suggestions you may have to help us improve our site, so please feel free to drop us a line.  Thank you for your time and we hope you enjoy your visit.  Osu!
